BUFFALO, N.Y. — A tragic early-morning fire in Buffalo’s MLK Park neighborhood claimed the lives of two young children, Jose and Jocelyn, and left five other people injured on Saturday, according to city officials.
Buffalo firefighters responded to a structure fire at 69 French Street around 5 a.m. after receiving reports that multiple occupants were trapped inside the residence. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy flames and smoke pouring from the home.
Fire officials later confirmed that two children—identified as 2-year-old Jose and 10-year-old Jocelyn—were found deceased inside the structure. Despite firefighters’ efforts, the intensity of the fire made rescue attempts extremely difficult.
Five Survivors Pulled from the Home
Crews successfully rescued two adults and three children, ages 6, 7, and 8, from the burning home. All five survivors were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the fire. Their current conditions have not yet been publicly disclosed.
In addition to the loss of life, the family also suffered the heartbreaking deaths of several pets, including a dog and two cats, officials said.
Damage and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities estimate that the fire caused approximately $300,000 in damage to the home and its contents. Two neighboring vacant properties also sustained damage due to the spread of flames and radiant heat.
The cause of the fire remains under active investigation. Fire investigators have been on scene throughout the day working to determine how the blaze began. Once officials complete their assessment, the city has ordered an emergency demolition of the structure due to the extent of the damage and the danger of structural collapse.
Community Grieves the Loss
The deaths of Jose and Jocelyn have deeply shaken the community, and neighbors say they are devastated by the tragedy. Support for the surviving family members is already growing as residents await further information on how they can assist those affected by this heartbreaking loss.
City officials are expected to release additional details as the investigation continues.
