SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified Dane Josephine Waddell, a 31-year-old woman from Spartanburg, as the victim found dead early Wednesday morning in a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the community and left a family mourning an unimaginable loss. According to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office, Waddell, a new mother who welcomed a baby girl in October, died following a hit-and-run that remains under active investigation.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to 369 Whitney Road at approximately 3:23 a.m. after receiving a call about a person located in a parking lot. When deputies arrived on scene, they discovered Waddell deceased. Emergency personnel and investigators quickly responded, working to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Evidence gathered at the scene revealed that Waddell had been run over and dragged by a vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries. The coroner confirmed that she was pronounced dead at 3:35 a.m. The nature of the injuries and evidence collected led investigators to classify the case as a hit-and-run, a serious felony offense under South Carolina law.
Investigators stated that security footage from the area provided valuable clues and helped identify the type of vehicle believed to be involved in the incident. However, despite those leads, authorities have not yet been able to locate the vehicle or identify a suspect. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
