Man Found Deceased from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound on Iowa Veterans Home Property

A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday after a 23-year-old Marshalltown man, identified as Jorell Handorf, was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while inside his vehicle on the grounds of the Iowa Veterans Home.

The situation began earlier in the day when Marshall County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 3300 block of 130th Street for reports of a family disturbance involving an armed individual. Family members had informed authorities that one of their relatives, later confirmed to be Handorf, had been displaying a handgun during the altercation. By the time deputies arrived on scene, Handorf had already left the residence, and it was believed that he may have traveled toward the city of Marshalltown.

A short time later, security personnel at the Iowa Veterans Home notified police after spotting a vehicle entering the property that matched the description provided by law enforcement. Multiple agencies responded immediately in an effort to locate the individual and ensure the safety of residents and staff.

Upon locating the vehicle, officers made several attempts to communicate with Handorf, but received no response. After securing the area, authorities approached the vehicle and determined that Handorf had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials also confirmed that he was not a resident or employee of the Iowa Veterans Home.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the incident remains under active investigation. They expressed appreciation for the coordinated response and assistance provided by several agencies, including the Marshalltown Police Department, Marshalltown SWAT, State Center Police, the Marshalltown Fire Department, UnityPoint Ambulance, and the Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office.

No additional injuries were reported, and authorities emphasized that at no time was there an ongoing threat to the public or to those living and working at the Iowa Veterans Home.

Further details will be released as the investigation continues.
