SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah community is grieving the tragic loss of Matthew Traywick, who was killed in a deadly shooting Sunday afternoon in the Target parking lot on Abercorn Street. Traywick’s life was cut short in a senseless act of violence that has left friends, family, and neighbors mourning a life taken far too soon.
Savannah Police reported that 30-year-old Tyler Linn has been arrested in connection with the shooting. He faces charges of murder and aggravated assault. Authorities say the incident occurred around 4:10 p.m., following an argument over a parking space. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Traywick suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Tyler Linn, a former Army Specialist who served from August 2015 to October 2023, remained at the scene after the shooting. Linn was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield as an unmanned aircraft systems repairer from December 2021 until his departure from the military in October 2023 and had no deployments during his service.
The heartbreaking incident has resonated across Savannah, where community leaders expressed shock and sorrow over the unnecessary loss of life. Alderman Purtee noted that the shooting stemmed from a dispute over a parking space, emphasizing the preventable nature of the tragedy. Mayor Van Johnson also spoke out, saying, “No disagreement over a parking space, or anything else should ever end in the loss of life. This needless, unnecessary violence underscores the daily pain felt by families across our city and the urgency of our collective work to reduce gun violence and strengthen community safety.”
Traywick’s friends and loved ones have begun sharing memories and tributes, remembering him as a caring and vibrant individual whose presence brought light to those around him. “Matt had a way of making everyone feel welcome,” one friend said. “He had a big heart, and this loss is just unimaginable.”
