The New Baltimore community is heartbroken as authorities confirm the passing of 31-year-old Melissa Garcia of Ira Township, who tragically lost her life in a single-vehicle crash sometime overnight between Sunday and early Monday morning.
According to the New Baltimore Police Department, Melissa was traveling eastbound on M-29 in her Jeep Liberty when, for reasons still under investigation, her vehicle left the roadway and struck several boats at the Marine Sport Center near Ruedisale Street. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Investigators believe the crash happened between 10:20 p.m. Sunday—the last time Melissa spoke with someone by phone—and 1:00 a.m. Monday morning. She had left her home to pick up pizza in New Baltimore but never returned. At around 3:00 a.m., after noticing she was overdue, loved ones filed a voluntary missing person report with the Clay Township Police Department.
It wasn’t until 6:54 a.m., when a passerby noticed the crash, that police were alerted and able to respond.
A Community Mourning a Beautiful Life
Melissa Garcia was more than a name in a police report—she was a daughter, a friend, a loved one, and a cherished member of her community. Those who knew her describe her as warm, loving, funny, and deeply devoted to the people she cared for. Her sudden loss leaves a void that cannot be filled.
Her family and friends now face the unimaginable pain of losing her so unexpectedly. As they navigate this heartbreaking time, the community stands with them in love and support.
The Investigation Continues
New Baltimore Police say the investigation into what caused Melissa to veer off the roadway remains ongoing. Officials are working to piece together the timeline and circumstances leading up to the crash.
