MUSKEGON, Mich. — A deep sense of sorrow hangs over the Muskegon community as family, friends, and neighbors mourn the heartbreaking loss of two young lives taken far too soon. Josh Fondren Jr., 25, and Cori May, 22, are remembered not only for the tragedy that ended their lives, but for the light, love, and laughter they brought to those who knew them.
On Saturday afternoon, a senseless act of violence unfolded inside a home near Jackson Avenue and McLaren Street, changing lives forever. What should have been an ordinary day became a moment of unimaginable loss for families who will now carry both love and grief in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
Josh Fondren Jr. is remembered as a kind-hearted soul with a spirit that could lift others even in their darkest moments. Those who loved him say he had a quiet strength and a deep loyalty to the people closest to him. He was someone who showed up for others, who valued friendship, family, and simple moments of joy. His life, though brief, was full of impact and meaning.
Cori May is remembered as a bright light — a young woman whose smile could effortlessly warm a room. She carried a gentle but powerful presence, marked by compassion, love, and hope for the future. Cori’s life, though tragically cut short, will forever be remembered through the lives she touched and the love she gave so freely.
This tragedy has deeply affected not only their families, but the entire Muskegon community. The violence that took place did more than take lives — it shook a neighborhood, broke hearts, and left questions that may never fully be answered. And yet, in the midst of mourning, the community has begun to show its strength through unity, prayer, and support for one another.
We also hold close in our thoughts the three individuals who were injured, including the young child whose innocence was touched by violence far too early. We pray for their healing, their strength, and their future.
As families grieve and communities struggle for peace, we honor Josh and Cori not by how they died, but by how they lived — through kindness, love, laughter, and the legacies they leave behind in the hearts of those who knew them.
May their memories be a blessing.
May their names be spoken with love.
May their light never fade.
