ECTOR COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) — The Bellville community and all who knew Derek Wayne Pearson, 49, are mourning a heartbreaking loss following a fatal two-vehicle crash that claimed his life Wednesday evening in Ector County. Derek’s life was tragically cut short in a sudden accident that has left family, friends, and loved ones grappling with grief and disbelief.
According to the Texas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on January 7 at the intersection of State Highway 302 and Farm-to-Market Road 866. Investigators reported that a 2022 Ford F-250, driven by Derek Wayne Pearson of Bellville, Texas, was traveling westbound in the inside lane of SH 302 when it collided with a 2024 Peterbilt 567 tractor-trailer that was traveling southbound on FM 866.
Authorities say the investigation revealed that the driver of the Peterbilt, Victor Armando Cardona, 39, of Chaparral, New Mexico, failed to yield the right of way at a posted stop sign. As a result, the trailer entered the intersection and blocked the westbound lanes of SH 302. The Ford F-250 struck the trailer, leading to a violent impact that proved fatal.
Despite wearing a seat belt, Derek Wayne Pearson sustained injuries that were unsurvivable. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officials. The driver of the Peterbilt was also wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash, according to troopers.
Emergency responders and investigators remained on scene for several hours as they documented the crash, cleared debris, and worked to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision. At this time, authorities have stated that no further information is available, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Beyond the facts of the crash, the loss of Derek Wayne Pearson represents a profound and painful void for those who loved him. He is remembered as a son, family member, friend, and member of his community whose life mattered deeply.
