With deep sadness and heavy hearts, the Gifford community mourns the tragic loss of Dequan Marquis Hill, whose life was taken in a fatal shooting during the early morning hours of Sunday, January 4, 2026. Dequan was 34 years old, a son of Gifford whose passing has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him.
At approximately 5:17 a.m., deputies with the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting on Laston Street. Upon arrival, they learned that multiple individuals had sustained gunshot wounds. Dequan Marquis Hill was pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of his injuries, marking a heartbreaking loss for his loved ones and the entire community. Two additional individuals were also wounded and transported for medical treatment. Their conditions have not been released.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is assisting with the ongoing investigation, alongside the Gifford Police Department. Hampton County Coroner Anna Fields responded to the scene and worked closely with Dequan’s family, providing compassion and care during an incredibly difficult moment. Her professionalism and support were acknowledged by the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office as the family faced the painful task of saying goodbye.
Sheriff Anthony Russell shared words that reflect the collective grief felt throughout the community, expressing heartfelt condolences to Dequan’s family and loved ones, as well as to all those in Gifford impacted by this tragedy. He also asked for continued prayers for the victims, their families, and the community as the investigation continues.
