The Bristol, Tennessee community is grappling with grief following a tragic weekend shooting that claimed the lives of 19-year-old Deonte Wright and 21-year-old Lexy Coleman, leaving a third victim critically injured. As residents come to terms with the loss, families, friends, and neighbors are remembering the lives of two young individuals whose potential and promise were cut short.
Deonte Wright, described by his father, Joseph Wright, as a kind and ambitious young man, was mourned publicly at a press conference on Sunday. Joseph Wright attended seeking answers about his son’s death, which the Bristol, Tennessee Police Department (BTPD) later confirmed. Deonte was remembered for his bright spirit, his love for family, and his dreams for the future, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Lexy Coleman, age 21, was also confirmed by the BTPD as one of the victims killed in the incident. Friends and family have begun sharing memories of Lexy’s warmth, her laughter, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her passing has left a profound void in the community and among her loved ones.
The third victim, who remains hospitalized in very critical condition, has not yet been publicly identified. Chief Matt Austin of the BTPD emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that the department is working tirelessly to ensure justice is served.
Investigation and Suspect
Authorities have identified 18-year-old Elijah Khalil Campbell, of Bristol, Virginia, as the suspect. According to Chief Austin, Campbell, the victims, and witnesses were acquaintances. Campbell reportedly turned himself in to the Bristol, Virginia Police Department after contacting authorities to surrender. He remains in Virginia awaiting extradition to Tennessee.
Campbell faces a series of charges, including:
- Two counts of first-degree murder
- One count of attempted first-degree murder
- Aggravated assault
- Especially aggravated burglary
- Tampering with evidence
- Reckless endangerment into a habitation
Chief Austin confirmed that Campbell is believed to be the sole suspect in the case.
