In Loving Memory: 19-Year-Old Zynaija Thomas Identified as Victim in Florence Homicide

The community of Florence and the town of Bishopville are grieving an unimaginable loss today as the identity of the victim in a tragic shooting has been confirmed. 19-year-old Zynaija Thomas, a young woman loved deeply by her family and cherished by those who knew her, was taken far too soon in an act of violence that has shaken the region to its core.

The Florence Police Department and the Florence County Coroner’s Office have released details of the incident, which occurred late Friday morning. Around 11:30 a.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 600 Block of Roberts Street. Soon afterward, authorities learned that a young woman suffering from gunshot wounds had been rushed to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, Zynaija tragically did not survive.

Investigators believe Zynaija was seated in a vehicle on Roberts Street when another vehicle approached. Occupants of that vehicle opened fire, striking her before fleeing the scene. While the investigation continues and detectives remain dedicated to finding answers, today is a day marked by profound sorrow—because the world has lost a bright, loving, and irreplaceable soul.

Those who knew Zynaija describe her as a vibrant young woman, full of energy, warmth, and compassion. She carried a beautiful spirit—gentle yet strong, kind yet fearless, hopeful even in difficult times. Her smile could light up a room, her laughter was contagious, and her presence made life richer for everyone fortunate enough to share space with her. She was a daughter, a friend, a loved one, and a young woman whose future held so much potential.

At just 19 years old, Zynaija was on the threshold of adulthood—a time of dreams, exploration, and new beginnings. She had goals she was working toward, plans she looked forward to, and a heart full of possibilities she was eager to chase. Her life was not defined by the tragedy that ended it, but by the love she gave, the memories she created, and the joy she brought into the lives of others.

As her family mourns a loss no parent or loved one should ever endure, the community stands beside them—offering prayers, support, and a collective determination to honor her memory. Zynaija’s life mattered. Her story matters. And justice for her remains a priority, not only for investigators but for every person whose life her light touched.

The Florence Police Department continues to seek information that may help bring answers and accountability. Anyone with knowledge that could assist in the ongoing investigation is asked to contact Lcpl. Murphy at cmurphy@cityofflorence.com or 843-665-3191. Information can also be submitted anonymously through the City of Florence Crime Tips form.

Today, we remember Zynaija Thomas—her kindness, her spirit, her beautiful future that was stolen too soon. May her memory bring strength to those who loved her, and may her story remind all of us of the preciousness of life and the urgent need to end senseless violence.

Rest in peace, Zynaija.

Your light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.
